Masterclasses & workshops
In 2004, renowned composer and pianist Ann Carr-Boyd presented the first ever masterclass for the project at the Riverina Conservatorium of Music in Wagga Wagga, NSW. A dozen young pianists and instrumentalists participated.
Ann’s return to the project in 2013 gave four young musicians - pianists, composers and singers - the opportunity to work on their craft with her in a public masterclass. Held at the Ballarat Centre of Music and the Arts, the 2013 Pure Poetry Masterclass was a new experience for most of the students, who said:
“I really enjoyed working with Ann, and I want to thank her for her wonderful advice.”
“I particularly enjoyed the intimacy between the performer and Ann.”
“Attending a masterclass was a new experience, and I learned a lot!”
Dozens of emerging writers have been supported through Pure Poetry workshops and mentorships in the decade since the project’s inception. New writing, developed through mentorships, has featured in recital programs, with the aim of broadening the profile of artists. Participants have said:
“I went from being petrified at the thought of performing, to actually enjoying it! The mentoring was very perceptive and really helpful - it has inspired me.” (Ballarat)
“Can't tell you how inspiring the experience was, and how much it rekindled my excitement about writing in general.” (Ballarat)
“For me it was a step forward I do not like to present my writing in a public forum but this forced me to and I am glad I did it.” (Ballarat)
“I found the whole experience terrific - and I have a brand-new appreciation of modern Australian classical music which, I have to admit, I knew nothing about, so there's a new interest for me too.” (Ballarat)
“How great it was to hear Australian compositions played by Australian artists - they felt like it set the perfect tone to frame the poems.” (Castlemaine)
“Thank you - Pure Poetry was something we wouldn't normally get the opportunity to hear and be part of in our area.” (Shepparton)
“It was such a privilege to have such high quality feedback on my poems. It helped me see the changes I could implement to strengthen my work. I now feel a lot more confident about my work.” (Maldon)
